ISIAQ MUHAMMADJAMIU ALKISIWIY is the Founder of AS-SUNNAH ACADEMY – Institute of Prophetic Medicine, an Islamic Medicine practitioner, author, researcher, and educator dedicated to integrating authentic Islamic teachings with responsible healthcare.
Introduction
Trauma is one of the greatest hidden health challenges of our time. Millions of people silently carry emotional wounds caused by childhood abuse, domestic violence, war, accidents, bereavement, abandonment, chronic illness, and other deeply painful experiences. Although these wounds may not be visible, they can profoundly affect the mind, emotions, relationships, physical health, and spiritual well-being.
As an Islamic Medicine practitioner and researcher, I believe that effective healing requires a balanced approach that combines authentic Islamic teachings with responsible psychological and medical knowledge. This is the foundation of Islamic Trauma Therapy.
What Is Trauma?
Trauma is an emotional and psychological response to distressing events that overwhelm a person’s ability to cope. Its effects may include:
- Persistent fear and anxiety
- Depression and hopelessness
- Flashbacks and nightmares
- Emotional numbness
- Difficulty trusting others
- Anger and irritability
- Loss of meaning and purpose
Trauma affects not only the mind but also the body, relationships, and spiritual life.
The Islamic Perspective on Emotional Pain
Islam does not deny emotional suffering. The Qur’an presents the experiences of Prophets who endured grief, rejection, betrayal, persecution, and loss.
Allah says:
فَإِنَّ مَعَ الْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا إِنَّ مَعَ الْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا
“Indeed, with hardship comes ease. Indeed, with hardship comes ease.”
(Qur’an 94:5–6)
This verse reminds us that hardship is not permanent and that hope remains even during the most difficult moments.
Healing Through Faith and Knowledge
Healing requires more than simply removing symptoms. It involves restoring balance in every aspect of life.
Islamic Trauma Therapy emphasizes:
- Strengthening faith in Allah
- Daily remembrance (Dhikr)
- Sincere Du’a
- Regular Salah
- Patience (Sabr)
- Trust in Allah (Tawakkul)
- Healthy lifestyle habits
- Family and community support
- Appropriate psychological and medical care when needed
Seeking professional help does not contradict reliance upon Allah. Rather, Islam encourages believers to use lawful means while placing complete trust in Allah.
A Whole-Person Approach
True healing addresses the entire human being:
- Body – physical health and wellbeing
- Mind – emotional and psychological recovery
- Heart – hope, peace and resilience
- Soul – spiritual connection with Allah
- Community – family, friends and compassionate support
This integrated approach is what I describe as Islamic Trauma Therapy.
Our Mission
Through AS-SUNNAH ACADEMY – Institute of Prophetic Medicine, our mission is to educate individuals, families, healthcare practitioners, counsellors, and Islamic scholars about compassionate, evidence-informed approaches to emotional healing rooted in the Qur’an and authentic Sunnah.
We aim to reduce stigma surrounding mental health while encouraging responsible collaboration between Islamic scholarship, healthcare professionals, and communities.
Final Reflection
No matter how deep your emotional wounds may be, never lose hope in the mercy of Allah.
Healing is a journey. It begins with acknowledging the pain, seeking beneficial knowledge, taking appropriate means, and trusting Allah throughout the process.
Every wounded heart deserves compassion, understanding, and hope.
May Allah grant healing to every heart burdened by pain and guide us to become sources of mercy for others.
