WHY DOES STRESS AFFECT THE HUMAN BODY?

WHY DOES STRESS AFFECT THE HUMAN BODY?

A Qur’anic, Prophetic, and Scientific Reflection

Every one of us experiences stress at some point in life.

A businessman worries about his finances.

A student worries about examinations.

Parents worry about their children.

Patients worry about their health.

Leaders worry about the responsibilities placed upon them.

Even the Prophets of Allah experienced moments of hardship, sorrow, and emotional pressure.

So the question is not whether stress exists.

The real question is:

Why did Allah create us in a way that emotional pressure can affect both the mind and the body?

Can grief affect our physical health?

Can fear disturb our sleep?

Can prolonged anxiety contribute to physical symptoms?

The answer is yes.

Islam teaches that the human being is a complete creation—our body, mind, heart, and soul are all connected. What affects one aspect of our lives can influence the others.

LIFE WAS NEVER MEANT TO BE FREE FROM TRIALS

Many people think that happiness means living a life without problems.

The Qur’an teaches us otherwise.

Allah says:

Transliteration:

Laqad khalaqnā al-insāna fī kabad.

Translation:

“Indeed, We have created man to live a life of struggle and effort.”

(Qur’an 90:4)

This verse reminds us that challenges are part of life.

No one is completely free from tests.

The believer, however, understands that every trial carries wisdom, and every hardship is an opportunity to draw closer to Allah.

EVEN THE PROPHETS EXPERIENCED EMOTIONAL DISTRESS

The greatest people who ever walked upon the earth were not free from sadness and hardship.

Prophet Yaʿqūb (AS) grieved deeply after being separated from his beloved son, Prophet Yusuf (AS).

Allah says:

Transliteration:

Wabyaddaṭ ʿaynāhu mina al-ḥuzni fahuwa kaẓīm.

Translation:

“His eyes became white from grief, for he suppressed his sorrow.”

(Qur’an 12:84)

This verse shows us that emotional pain can have physical effects.

Feeling grief or stress does not mean a person has weak faith.

It simply means they are human.

THE BODY AND MIND ARE CONNECTED

Long-term stress may affect the body in different ways.

Some people may experience:

• Difficulty sleeping

• Headaches

• Muscle tension

• Loss of appetite or overeating

• Fatigue

• Difficulty concentrating

• Irritability

Modern medicine also recognizes that prolonged stress can influence both physical and mental health.

This is why we should care for both our emotional and physical well-being.

WHAT DOES ISLAM TEACH US?

Islam does not tell us to ignore our emotions.

Instead, it teaches us how to manage them.

Allah says:

Transliteration:

Alā bi-dhikri llāhi taṭma’innu al-qulūb.

Translation:

“Indeed, it is by the remembrance of Allah that hearts find tranquility.”

(Qur’an 13:28)

This does not mean believers will never experience stress.

Rather, it reminds us that true inner peace comes from maintaining a strong relationship with Allah.

THE EXAMPLE OF THE PROPHET MUHAMMAD (PBUH)

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) experienced enormous challenges throughout his life.

He faced rejection.

He suffered persecution.

He lost beloved family members.

He carried the responsibility of guiding an entire nation.

Yet, whenever difficulties arose, he turned to Allah through prayer and supplication while also taking practical steps to solve problems.

This teaches us an important lesson:

Trust Allah, but also take the appropriate means.

This is the true meaning of Tawakkul.

PRACTICAL STEPS FOR MANAGING STRESS

When you feel overwhelmed:

✔ Strengthen your relationship with Allah.

✔ Pray sincerely and consistently.

✔ Increase your Dhikr and Du’a.

✔ Maintain healthy eating and sleeping habits.

✔ Exercise regularly according to your ability.

✔ Speak to trusted family members or knowledgeable people.

✔ Seek professional medical or psychological support when necessary.

Remember, seeking help is not a sign of weak faith.

A LESSON FOR OUR TIME

Today, people are more connected through technology than ever before.

Yet many still feel lonely.

Many have more wealth than previous generations.

Yet they continue to struggle with anxiety and emotional distress.

Islam reminds us that true peace is not found in wealth alone.

It is found through faith, gratitude, meaningful relationships, good character, responsible living, and remembrance of Allah.

FINAL REFLECTION

My dear brothers and sisters,

Stress does not mean Allah has abandoned you.

Sometimes it is a reminder to slow down.

Sometimes it is a call to seek help.

Sometimes it is an opportunity to strengthen your relationship with Allah.

Do not carry your burdens alone.

Turn to Allah.

Make use of the lawful means He has provided.

Support one another with compassion and kindness.

And never lose hope.

Allah says:

Transliteration:

Fa inna maʿa al-ʿusri yusrā. Inna maʿa al-ʿusri yusrā.

Translation:

“Indeed, with hardship comes ease. Indeed, with hardship comes ease.”

(Qur’an 94:5–6)

May Allah grant us peaceful hearts, sound minds, healthy bodies, steadfast faith, and complete trust in Him.
